It was a perfect blend of nice weather and the students being back that caused Downtown Lawrence’s Final Fridays to be so bustling with activity. But amongst all the business, scooting back and forth by patrons, buskers, and outdoor patio diners, a jovial noise came out of a small, hole-in-the-wall space.

Guitarma, Lawrence’s latest instrument store, opened its doors Friday evening with a small show. Located at 726 Massachusetts (it was previously Miss Fortune’s Creation Station), the store sports two levels. On the first is the sales floor (we also spotted a nifty jukebox in the corner). The second, a darling little performance space. Watching bands haul gear up the narrow staircase was reminiscent of the Old Love Garden. There were plenty of windows and natural light, with a just-right stage up against the West wall. On this night Approach (pictured above), LK Ultra, and Arc Flash helped kick off the store’s opening. Owner Casey Green wanted to mark the night with the special show featuring local musicians, but says there’s a potential to have more events there.

You can see the new space at 726 Massachusetts (and pick up a free copy of I Heart Local Music Magazine while you’re there).
