Dean Monkey and the Dropouts
“If you want to see a lot of white pasty thighs and doo-wop, then you came to the right place.”

On Saturday night one of the members of Dean Monkey and the Dropouts leaned into the mic and made that declaration as he and his bandmates stood onstage wearing nothing more than short shorts and button down shirts (while the temperature remained frosty and frigid outside).

The last time I saw Dean Monkey and the Dropouts, I was none too pleased. Every time they perform, they sport a different costume. But that summer night at the Whatever Forever label launch party, they were in full clown/juggalo makeup. Since I despise clowns more than anything in the world, I was distracted from their music and deliriously full of rage.

So you can imagine how elated I was when the doo-woppers appeared in their blue bunny ice cream uniforms on Saturday. The eight-piece band took up the entire Replay stage yet still made room for their graceful and flowing dance moves. The perky performers belted out one adorable doo-wop tune after another. Some songs told stories of crushes and loved ones, others told of heartbreak. But all were delightful and I’m glad I finally got the chance to see the elusive group, who previously limited their performances to a garbage-filled ditch in Lawrence (literally).
