You can add this release to the rebirth of electronic music in Lawrence.

Etan Tloh, whose name is actually Nate Holt but performs under the name Asterales, can normally be found behind the keys when rapper Approach is onstage. But this week, he’s stepping out on his own with the Work Hours EP. With tracks that could easily fit into the “Drive” soundtrack, the EP is full or lush electronic numbers that float through the air. The ambient nature of this record could also comfort any late-night DJ on KJHK building the chilleset of set lists.

The moment we live for, however, is when vocalist Katlyn Conroy (of La Guerre) enters the room. “Clever Abyss” is Portishead-level sultriness, seducing its way through our ears and leaving dream-like impressions in our minds. What a trip! This track alone will be a must-have on every local playlist this Fall.

The EP ends on a fantastically upbeat track featuring another vocalist, Tanner Walle (former Kanas musician). “Nothing Wrong So Far” features just one line, “There is nothing wrong,” repeated over and over again. But, as always with electronic music, it’s about the buildup. Each proceeding layer compliments the song (and the vocals), building into a chorus that’s smooth yet glitched at the same time, ending on just the vocals echoing off into the distance while Holt’s keys carry you home from the dreamland Work Hours crafted.
