If you like brass with your bluegrass, head to your nearest Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy show.

With how long the Wichita band has been around, we’re fairly embarrassed that we haven’t worked them into our schedules more. Well, egg on our face. Because this is the band that really made our weekend.

The speed-folk bluegrass and brass rockers remind us of early Gogol Bordello (back when they were cool and new). When we wandered by Lucia, folks were being lured in off the street thanks to their rowdy onstage demeanor. The venue was lined with crust punks and lesbians, so we knew we were in good company. The stamina on these folks is nothing short of breathtaking, the kind of band that leaves you winded just from watching them.

We think Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy should be in every bluegrass fan’s diet. They’ve maintained a steady following across the nation while keeping it as DIY as possible. We hope they return to Lucia, but what we’d really like to see is the band owning a huge stage at Live on Mass (they’re perfectly capable of spreading that energy to larger crowds).
