There comes a time in every person’s life when they realize “Shit, I’m getting old.” That moment, dear reader, came for yours truly on Friday night at the Replay. We went to check out the hot new band in town, Arlonious Rodeo King. What we learned shook us to our mediocre music journalist core. Nearly every person in the band was the son of a musician we’ve covered for more than a decade in Lawrence. Now, these kids are old enough to have a beer and headline a show at the Replay. Did we pack it up and decide to retire? Of course not. Rather, we celebrated a continuation of local music merriment through the next generation.
The members of the bluegrass band are descendants of Old Fangled, Lance Fahy, and Spencer and Rains. Kids we once recognized as teenagers are now holding their own and killing it. We personally think they should enter the band competition at Fidpick. The night felt like one big Fidpick reunion anyway, with Kansas City’s The Urban Spelunkers and our old standbys Old Fangled rounding out the bill (bonus points for seeing members of Arlonious Rodeo King joining Old Fangled and filling in for a missing member).
