This month, we should have been donning ALL the sparkly colors, gussying up, and getting ready for the party of the year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic sidelined the local drag scene, and has us delaying our PRIDE plans until the Fall. But I Heart Local Music still wanted to celebrate the queer community, so we called up some of Lawrence’s top-notch drag performers for a virtual celebration.

In the video below, you’ll see MsAmanda Love, Raven Jade Von’Du, Novacayne, and Miss Gay Kansas Deja Brooks all cutting a rug to a familiar tune. Electronic maestro Pala Zolo remixed a song by local indie rocker Rachel Mallin (who was featured in our PRIDE issue last year), and turned “It Isn’t Love” into a track ready for the dance floor. Because we’re in a quarantine, the video was recorded social-distancing-style from the comfort of their driveways and sidewalks.

MsAmanda Love, Raven Jade Von’Du, and Novcayne (the King of Lawrence!) are all fixtures at weekly drag shows in Lawrence, while Deja Brooks is gracefully continuing a reign as Miss Gay Kansas 2020. You can also catch Deja Brooks at a virtual drag queen storytime for the Lawrence Public Library, Deja’s Reading Rainbow, this weekend.
