Normally at this time of year, we’d be standing on the hot pavement at a music festival watching dozens of bands. But because of the COVID-19 Quarantine, we found ourselves standing on the hot pavement of a Lawrence sidewalk watching a couple of bluegrass musicians instead.

Lucas and Kahlen Mitchell helped us kick off a new feature we’re doing here at I Heart Local Music, all from the comfort of their home in North Lawrence. We’re bringing you performances from a safe CDC recommended distance for our new Driveway Sessions, inspired by Nick Carswell’s impromptu St. Patrick’s Day performance. The two are missing live music just as much as the rest of us, especially the shows they play with their bands (Kahlen with Unfit Wives and Plead the Belly, and Lucas with The Dewayn Brothers). But this week, they livened up the neighborhood with a cover of Del McCoury Band’s “Nothing Special.” The song is one you might have heard at Unfit Wives shows (and you’ll likely hear it again once the Quarantine is over. Perhaps one of the sweetest moments of the afternoon was when they finished, and looked up to find that their elderly neighbors had pulled out the lawn chairs and were watching the show from the safety of their front lawns.

You can watch the clip below, and keep an eye out for more Driveway Sessions in the future.
