Recently I discovered a feeling of nostalgia I hadn’t experienced in years for the Midwest; memories of summer and the landscape and hot nights and cool breezes. As soon as I heard The Supa Flowa, that feeling became exaggerated. Suddenly I was in the passenger seat of a friend’s car with the sticky dusk air clinging to my arm while it hung out the window. A field fading from the light as the sun sets. Maybe it was the sunflowers mentioned throughout the album?

Regardless, Supa Flowa’s delivery is that breeze that cools you suddenly; the lyrics are oozing confidence and a refreshing positivity (in “Zoomin’” it’s: “I don’t need no ‘xans, I don’t need no friends, I don’t need no drugs, I don’t need no trends”) while skipping over shimmering samples (“Zing!”) and terrific beats. There’s the breathtaking introduction on “The Universe” and the mellow “Spaced.” which (not to be corny) places Supa Flowa on another plane above us all. The title track is a tremendous frenzy of fearlessness; the upbeat and catchy instrumentals are impossible to resist. The Supa Flowa EP is an exercise in opening yourself up and Supa Flowa’s lack of hesitation to do so is an inspiration to us all.
