A few months ago, a fella and his lady were ogling some historic photos when they came across an interesting one from the Salem Witch Trials. The photo from colonial Massachusetts featured a “Witch Jail.” The duo thought that would make a great band name, and a few weeks later a new Lawrence band was born.

The frontman has a history of theatrics with his prior bands (Pale Hearts, Spook Lights), and that Tom Foolery was front and center at Witch Jail’s debut show Wednesday night. The set was a short one, about 15 minutes, but featured lots of loud and sporadic bursts of energy. You may recognize the drummer as one half of garage duo Mr. and the Mrs. Instead of playing guitar, he takes a turn pounding on the drums for this motley crew.

The frontman is best when he screams, and he certainly has a set of pipes in this lineup. Here’s a good example of that wailing in one of their songs, called “No Pizza (Motherfucker).”
