Lawrence got to see the local music scene’s feminine side on Saturday night. Two female-powered groups took the stage at the Replay and brought a dandy load of music with them.

I had been itching to see the solo project from Katlyn Conroy (of Cowboy Indian Bear fame) for a while, and it paid off on Saturday night. Conroy is a dynamic songwriter, with songs ranging from dramatic and soulful to cute and perky. Her voice can tame even the most restless of scenesters, and I couldn’t help but notice folks rushing in from outside to watch her perform.

She kept things fairly simple with a keyboard, some percussion and the occasional backup vocals (less is more, people). I love listening to her accompany other bands around town (Fourth of July, Hospital Ships), and it was nice to finally see her take the lead. We were treated to all sorts of tricks with her voice, and it was just darling. I also had the nagging suspicion that she has an endless stock of songs ready to pour out to the masses, who no doubt will welcome them with open arms.

Fire In The Churchyard

I really didn’t know ukuleles could rock. Fire In The Churchyard is comprised of two lovely ladies bursting with scrumptious ditties. The lead singer stood on stage and swayed while she sang and strummed her ukulele. Because I have a soft spot for drummers, I was especially fond of the band’s perky percussionist. Through her tense concentration, you could see a dry smile every now and then. She provided steady beats and alluring backup vocals. I think I have a girl crush.

Near the end of their set, they covered Wu-Tang’s “C.R.E.A.M.” I never thought I’d hear a ukulele cover of that song. Oh Fire In The Churchyard, you are god damn delightful.
