We don’t think it would be fair for you to simply think of Lauren Mayberry as “the singer from Chvrches.” The truth is, Mayberry has been a creator her entire life, crafting sounds in a number of bands before ever reaching Chvrches. Now, she’s spreading her wings with her solo career.
She stopped by The Granada on Sunday evening for one of the early stops on her tour, playing to a modest and enthusiastic crowd. It’s hard to believe there were just three musicians onstage, the sound was so large. Mayberry was also keen on making sure she used up the entire stage, twirling from one end to another, reaching out to her fans and sometimes toward the sky. She has incredible stage presence (not surprising, considering her years of experience to perfect it) and hit those soprano highs she’s known for with impeccable accuracy.

We refer to her as a creator because it feels like she’ll never run out of ideas. Even on this night, rather than a setlist taped to the stage, there were three pages of lyrics (as she’s always trying out something new). Her cover of “Bittersweet Symphony” was a big hit, but fans were mostly enthused by all the new music off her recently debuted Vicious Creature, released just a couple of months ago. When she wasn’t singing, she was chatting up her fans– and let us tell you, she was absolutely delightful and charming.
The very introspective alt-pop solo act, Cult of Venus, opened the show with moody and very etherial vibes. Her music felt like a vessel for messages and topics (like Climate Change) delivered in a mesmerizing way to reach the masses.
