The boys are back in town indeed.

Hembree has been busy since moving to Los Angeles. The former Lawrence natives have been doing all the things bands do when they try to make it big. They tour constantly, sometimes they get on great bills and festivals, and for the most part carry the burden of being their own management. But whenever they come to Lawrence, it’s a party.

When they hit the Bottleneck on Saturday night, it was a masterclass in how to throw a hometown show. They had a host of local guest stars (including Ebony Tusks’ Marty Hillard and Lauren Lovelle), frontman Isaac Flynn invited his dad up onstage for an 80’s jam, and they even ordered pizza for the audience live from the stage (Pizza Shuttle, of course, as one does when in Lawrence). They stopped mid-set to hand out slices of pizza to fans while singing the famous local restaurant’s earworm of a jingle (there’s video of the iconic moment below). The fans already love them– I mean, the floor was shaking because they were dancing along so hard. But they spared no expense or antic, and proved this is exactly how you avoid being another boring white guy indie rock band.

They were joined by Creature Comforts (a treat for Lawrence, as they rarely make appearances here) and local favorites Flash Floods (joined by local guitarist Bradley McKellip). Photos from the night below.
