In the family unit of 90’s bands, Barenaked Ladies are always going to be the fun uncle. The Canadians have a dedicated fan base of people who seek joy, and the band was there to give it to them at the Starlight on Sunday night. Barenaked Ladies came into fame for their improvising capabilities, which they did on Sunday, making up lyrics on the spot referencing their shenanigans throughout the night up to that point (and teasing a new album on the way). They have such a closeness with their fans, constantly leading them in singalongs and intermittent barrels of laughter. Under cool skies and mild weather, it couldn’t have been a more pleasant atmostphere.

They were joined by Minneapolis’ Semisonic, who brought acoustic bangers and a no-nonsense Midwestern attitude. It’s worth noting that in addition to showing off new track “Grow Your Own,” they departed from their usual setlist with “Basement Tapes” because it’s a song about stopping in Kansas City during their early touring days.

Scottish rockers Del Amitri, by far the most chill of the three, opened the evening up. You have to understand that while most Americans know them for their big hit “Roll To Me,” the band is actually a bigger deal back in the UK. It’s easy to see why. Their short setlist was full of expertly written songs and harmonizing to make you melt. This is a band so good, we’d rather see them in a cozy mid-size venue than a massive outdoor stage. Also, hey Del Amitri your guitarist (yeah, the one that looks like Lemmy) is metal as fuck and cool as hell.
