Every now and then you run into a Monday so hectic, you just need to settle down with a really lovely show. That’s perhaps why the crowd was so thrilled with all the chill and positive vibes at the Bottleneck when Fenne Lily, Christian Lee Hutson, and Work Wife took the stage.

The night offered a close and intimate rapport between the musicians and their audience, with more than the usual amount of onstage banter from all three acts (who somehow had pretty close ties to Kansas despite hailing from faraway lands). Fenne Lily had that fantastic deadpan English charm about her, and she countered her very heavy lyrics off her latest release Big Picture with an instantly likable wittiness about her. Christian Lee Hutson divided his time between comedic tales about volleyball and the Back Eyed peas before diving into beautiful crooning, harmonizing, and guitar work (it was like listening to Elliott Smith in his prime, if Smith had a sense of humor). This was Work Wife’s first show with the tour, and she won over fans with her lo-fi approach to indie rock.
