Rolf Petermann stands in front of the new SeedCo location at 8th and Delaware

One of the biggest driving forces for arts, music, and culture in this town is celebrating a rebirth this weekend. SeedCo, home to a host of artists and musicians within the Whatever Forever family, is reopening in a new building at 8th and Delaware. They’ll be throwing a grand soiree in style this Saturday from 4:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. The event, dubbed SeedCo Harvest, will bring eight bands to the stage, including CS Luxem, Your Friend, Dean Monkey and the Dropouts, and more.

Full Speed Ahead

The main force behind the scene is Rolf Petermann, a man who has certainly had his hands full. At the beginning of the year, the Whatever Forever head honcho was renting out spaces to bands in the original building behind the Poehler Lofts. But after attempts to keep up with city fire codes in the aging building, Petermann decided it was time to pack up the Warehouse Arts District and move on. Now, armed with three professional sound quality studios and 20 artist spaces, SeedCo is ready to go at it full speed ahead. “We’re going to revamp everything,” Petermann says. “We’re looking to make everything run smoother in terms of scheduling. Now that sound studios are insulated, we can have bands rehearsing at the same time.”

Transitions and Shifts

Having a steady home for a great deal of the town’s music makers is a key ingredient to getting the scene to thrive. “Beyond just having a space, it’s having a group of people to work harder and share their recording knowledge, knowledge of gear, or even just sharing gear, microphones, amps,” Petermann says. “What I’ve observed is that the quality has gone up like crazy, exponentially. The idea with each of these transitions and shifts is that the backdrop feels more and more professional, which pushes the user of that space to act that way and fill out their shoes, fit into that role.”

Beyond just giving musicians an opportunity to settle down and get professional about their craft, the new space gives the Whatever Forever label an opportunity to grow. Petermann says they’re looking to expand releases to tapes and CDs (with digital downloads still included in the package), and are looking forward to their holiday compilation releases. It’s hope on the horizon for Petermann, who plowed through the challenges of moving the collective and setting up camp for dozens of bands in a new home. “It just seems like the ball’s already rolling,” Petermann admitted. “There’s so much momentum and interest that the feedback from people and the joy I get from listening to all our members work on is immense. It’s great.”
