If you haven’t stopped by miniBar in Kansas City, it’s worth checking out. The venue serves as an offshoot of Record Bar, and uses a small space upstairs for live shows. The intimate setting was perfect for Friday night’s set featuring The Belles and Josh Berwanger.

This was a unique night for those fond of Josh Berwanger’s music. He rarely plays solo sets, and on this night he pulled out songs from his previous work in Only Children as well as some unreleased material. The crowd was also treated to a couple of tracks off his most recent album, Strange Stains. Berwanger boasts some of the most beautiful and smooth vocals in the area, and his isolated set only enhanced that pleasing sound while his guitar chords bounced off the walls and frosty window panes of the room.

The night’s superb lineup continued when The Belles took an opportunity to produce a rare performance. Members of the Caves joined them onstage (Andrew Ashby spent time playing with the band back in 2002), complimenting the Belles’ graceful and delicate songwriting with radiant rhythms. Even with so many members making up a full band onstage, the group still put forth a succinct and concentrated tone. Half the vocalists remarked on the strain they endured after losing their voices this week, but you could hardly tell thanks to the resonating harmonies.

Here are a couple of clips from the evening, featuring “The Late Hours” and “Here To Hear.”
