If you’ve been lacking some joy in the queer community lately, Thursday night’s show at the Granada was the place to find it.
Notoriously queer rage rockers Lambrini Girls made a triumphant return to the Granada, having previously appeared a couple of years ago opening for Amyl and the Sniffers. Like last time, Phoebe Lunny spent a great deal of time on the floor with the fans, constantly interacting and getting up close and personal with them. This was a show where you needed stamina, as Lunny consistently demanded mosh pits and the occasional wall of death. The crowd was happy to oblige and threw down hard while dreaming of violent revolution at the urging of the band’s lyrics.
Lambrini Girls laid out all of our collective grievances as a nation, tackling our government, ICE raids, and the genocide in Gaza. In return, the fans put their emotions into a wall of energy that never ended. They ended with a special apperanace from Big Girl’s Kaitlin Pelkey coming out to crowd surf and a rousing rendition of “Cuntology 101” and “Big Dick Energy.” If indulging in big, gay, angry feelings is your bag, this was the show for you.
Fellow English musicians Big Special also joined them on this tour. The mighty duo packs a big punch with genuine lyrics delivered in a half-poetry, half-singing style. Their lyrics centered a little more on depression, though they brought plenty of joy to the room (especially to one young fan who got to join them in smashing the cymbal along to the music).
The night opened with the very eye-catching Big Girl, who brought flair to their rock and roll style. The very anti-fascist group hyped up the audience with dreams of debauchery, yelling “Where are we shoplifting from these days?….Hobby Lobby!” before going back to shredding on guitar.
