Young Widows

If you’re the type who might enjoy a face-melting night of rock, look no further than The Riot Room in Kansas City on Thursday. Young Widows, along with My Disco, Walking Oceans and Lawrence favorites Mansion, will all take the stage for what’s sure to be an evening of brutal ballads.

Kansas City is just one of many stops for Young Widows. The band is out promoting their new album, In and Out of Youth and Lightness. Make no mistake, this is a dark album. The band even recorded it in a funeral home. But the experience was a pleasant one for frontman Evan Patterson. “This funeral home is kind of off in a ghetto area, but it’s very secluded,” said Patterson. “It was nothing but a pleasure the entire time.”

The band is out of seclusion now, and hitting the road. But it doesn’t come without their fair share of trials and tribulations. Some obstacles, like broken down vans, are easy to tackle. Others, not so much. “I actually got arrested a year ago for missing a court date I didn’t even know I missed, for expired tags,” said Patterson, who says that playing a show in Canada has now become a “pain in the ass.” “Now I have a record, which is really annoying, because I get to the border and they’re all ‘Why did you go to jail?’ and I have to go throughout his whole process…I wish I had a cooler story, but I missed a court date.”

Getting to Kansas City won’t be as tricky. Patterson is no stranger to the area. “I’ve played Kansas City several times with old bands, and every time it’s probably been a different venue,” said Patterson. “I played a garage in Kansas City. I played…I can’t even remember all the venues. I’ve been all over there.”

After the tour, Patterson has no plans for settling down. He has plans to “Get back home, make another record. Yeah, it’s a cycle.”

Catch Young Widows at The Riot Room on Thursday, June 2nd, with My Disco, Walking Oceans and Mansion.
