Anvil is going to outlive everyone in the metal world. In fact, they’re kind of famous for their longevity. The Canadian metal band’s long and storied career was brought to the forefront in the 2008 documentary “Anvil! The story of Anvil,” and bands immediately saw this as a reflection of their own stories, shooting the band’s popularity even higher.
They’re nothing if not authentic, and came loaded with entertaining stories from their lengthy career while completely self-aware of their status with their fans. Steve “Lips” Kudlow, now 70, noted “We got some old Anvil fans! I see the grey hair… and in some cases, no hair!” Anvil’s dedicated fan base (some even traveling from hours away) showed up with so much enthusiasm, no one noticed the storms and flash flooding happening outside (ah, a Kansas summer). The band rewarded them with songs from their remarkable discography, even reaching as far back as singles from their first album in 1981. Kudlow starting the show with some shredding amongst a circle of fans was arguably the hit of the night.
They were joined on this tour stop by duo (normally a trio) Midnite Hellion, who are just kicking off a lengthy summer tour ahead of their latest single release, “Cross the Line.” The band’s songs came fast and heavy, with an impressive set of drum solos. Local heavy hitters Sarkatha (who, like Anvil, also carry a larger-than-life presence on the stage) opened the night.
