Joyce Manor fans – Photo by Fally Afani

You really just can’t sleep on when Joyce Manor comes to town. The minute the California rockers fired up their heavy set at Liberty Hall on Saturday, the bodies started flying and they didn’t stop through the encore. Touring in support of their latest album, I Used To Go To This Bar, they brought the force of a thousand suns to the stage. Their fans are delightfully feral (and we’re pretty sure this is the most leg tattoos we’ve seen in one place at the same time), thrusting their bodies into the air to crowd surf the entirety of the set. In fact, you could sometimes find around 10 folks crowd surfing at once. The band powered through to fit as many songs as they could, even sometimes asking the fans for requests (this turned into a cacophony of screamed requests that comedically lasted for several minutes during the encore).

The four-band lineup was so good, the other three could have toured without Joyce Manor and it still would have been a wild and unruly show. Fellow Californians Militarie Gun absolutely threw down hard with the energy of a veteran rock band (though they only have two albums under their belt, if you can believe it). The first half of the show belonged to the East Coast hardcore scene, with D.C. duo Teen Mortgage and Baltimore’s Combat (who are frequent Lawrence visitors) opening the night.
