“Lawrence fucking Kansas! You’ve treated us right for a long time,” Murder By Death’s frontman Adam Turla stated at the top of their show before rallying “Let’s get depressed!”

This was a special night at Liberty Hall for Murder By Death, as they were on their farewell tour across the country. In an effort to reward the fans for sticking by them for 25 years, they played two to three songs off every album. But the biggest cheers of the night came when they dedicated “Wandering” to local promoter Jacki Becker (who will absolutely murder me for how much I’m about to gush.

Jacki heads Up To Eleven Productions and is one of the staples of the music scene. There really isn’t much of a music scene without Jacki, and she’s definitely behind a good chunk of the band’s live shows (as well as all the other shows you love and enjoy). In all, she’s promoted 106 shows for Murder By Death over the last two decades (we’ve seen the receipts!). Because she’s so active all over town in nonprofits and volunteering (and kickball!), everyone knows Jacki (how does she find time for it all?!). So it’s no surprise that the audience of this sold-out show knew her name when Turla mentioned it onstage. “Wandering” starts with “I find myself on the road again, the wind has blown us astray my friend” and it felt fitting for the moment. Farewell shows are always emotional, but any good Lawrence music fan knows this also ends a major chapter in Jacki’s life and work (which we’ve all thoroughly enjoyed the bounties of). Thanks for bringing Murder By Death to us all of these years, Jacki (and thank you Murder By Death for taking good care of our Jacki). We heart you.
