There’s an indie pop resurgence happening right now in the music scene. For those who yearn for deeply emotional lyrics and just the dreamiest guitars, clovers daughter might hit the spot. clovers daughter, the moniker for Minneapolis-based Noor Shami, is already gaining streams on Spotify and was named The Current’s Artist of the Month for June. We caught up with her ahead of her show at minibar on September 1 while she’s touring in support of her latest release, Out of Character.
IHLM: We’re loving this indie pop resurgence happening in live music right now. What drew you to connect your voice to this genre?
CD: Indie pop gives me a lot of room to be honest without having to fit into one sound. I’m drawn to the balance of intimacy and energy—you can have really personal lyrics, but still build a live show that feels big and alive. That contrast is what made the genre feel natural for me.
IHLM: As we transition from “Hot Girl Summer” to “Sad Girl Autumn,” your EPs Bittersweet (2025) and Fragile Feeling (2026) are providing a perfect soundtrack to these vibes. These are some hauntingly beautiful songs. Can you talk about the place in your life where these songs are coming from?
CD: A lot of those songs came from me being right in the middle of everything and trying to make sense of it as I was going through it. Bittersweet and Fragile Feeling feel really tied to those specific moments in my life. My new album, Out of Character, which comes out August 19, is almost me looking back at those same experiences from the other side. It’s a lot more about questioning who I was in that relationship, the different roles we both played, and realizing that maybe the story I had been telling myself wasn’t completely true. It feels like a natural next chapter to those EPs.
IHLM: What would you like listeners to take away from your music?
CD: I hope people can find a piece of themselves in it. Even when I’m writing about something really specific to my own life, I want the feeling behind it to be recognizable. If a song can make someone feel understood, or put words to something they haven’t been able to explain themselves, that means a lot to me.
IHLM: What are your fans like?
CD: They’re really passionate and open. A lot of them connect deeply with the lyrics, but they also show up ready to have fun and be part of the live experience. I’ve been really lucky to build a community of people who care about the music and genuinely support what I’m creating. Seeing some of the same faces come back to shows, bring friends, and grow with the music has been really special.
IHLM: Why do you feel it’s important to keep doing what you’re doing with clovers daughter?
CD: clovers daughter has become a way for me to turn really specific moments in my life into something bigger than myself. Every release and every show teaches me something new about who I am as an artist, and I think I’d be doing myself a disservice if I stopped following that just because the path isn’t always easy.
