This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime shows. On Wednesday, The Granada will be hosting an all-star local lineup of musicians to help raise money for kids with disabilities and illnesses. Kevin Morby, Hello Biplane, and CS Luxem will all join forces with the “Songs for Kids” band, which highlights disability inclusion in the music scene. This will be the 19th year for the event, which takes place all over the country and features a “Pay What You Can” structure.
We chatted with Josh Rifkind, founder of the Songs for Kids Foundation, ahead of the show.
IHLM: Why did you choose these specific stops on your tour?
JF: We are heading from Atlanta to Buena Vista, CO, where we’ll be performing at King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s music festival, Field of Vision.
IHLM: How did you connect with folks for your Lawrence stop?
JF: Jacki Becker [Eleven Productions] was recommended by Kevin Morby to promote the show, and she’s been the real hero for this stop!
IHLM: What’s something surprising you’ve noticed at these events?
JF: It’s amazing to watch the crowd’s response to our performances. People’s faces turn from curiosity to excitement and support SO fast!
IHLM: Why do you feel it’s important to do what you’re doing?
JF: Our kids deserve to not just be respected, but cheered! Everyone should be able to take the life journey they wish, and the world needs to be more inclusive. We’re all different and unique in our own ways, and we all want the same thing…love! Our Songs For Kids Band! shows people that our abilities are limitless!
IHLM: What’s something you’re wanting to see come out of these shows?
JF: I’m hoping folks get behind our mission and consider supporting us. We mentor our kids year round (hundreds!) and we have never charged a family a single penny. Any support and donations for this tour and our year round mentorship goes such a long way!
