Just before Christmas, Toughies have hit us with a little holiday gift. Ain’t That Something is a quick EP, the last release before a lineup change has a presence on future recordings. With this release, the band further progresses their knack for anthemic moments and grand pop ballads (one of the few bands capable of such a thing in today’s local scene).
Those beautiful harmonies they’ve nailed since the beginning of their career take center stage on “Charlie.” The track also features upbeat tempos Toughies have grown comfortably into over the last year– that same buoyancy comes back around for “Wind,” but this time with a sweet organ winding throughout the song. An old song resurfaces at the end, but with a new attitude. “What Are Hands For?” has been a fan favorite for a while here in Lawrence, and despite consistent new releases has always made appearances at their live shows.
You can listen to the EP, recorded by local Steve squire, below before catching them this Friday at White Schoolhouse with Dreamgirl, Momma’s Boy, and LION.
