A new band full of familiar faces exploded onto the scene Tuesday night when they opened for Gun Outfit at the Replay.

JOCKS is the bastard lovechild of Dry Bonnet and Mouthbreathers, and it shows. You’ve got the best of both bands. Frontman Zach Campbell, who we’ve come to know as the guitarist for Rooftop Vigilantes and the drummer for Mouthbreathers, is really at the top of his game right now. He’s got his screaming perfected to a science, and the band hardly let a song pass without showing off Campbell’s pipes.

Drummer Seth Wiese was hard at work on this evening. After practicing with two bands that day and playing with Dry Bonnet to open the night up, he flexed his drumming muscles. We also got a good dose of Ben Kimbell’s screaming and intricate guitar work while bassist Derek Solsberg jumped about the stage and got everyone good and pumped.

These songs were dirty. Dirty dirty dirty. It’s no surprise that JOCKS sported song titles like “I wanna do drugs” and “Cigarette Bed,” considering the extensive background of the garage rockers involved. “This song’s called cigarette bed,” Campbell announced halfway into their set. “It’s about falling asleep in Chicago, waking up, and trying to go to the bathroom in a gas station and just having cigarettes fall out.” Then, after one song about kickboxing, the band yelled “Sports!” and took shots of whiskey. Watch out Lawrence, this band’s dirty work might be your anthem for what is most likely to be one rocking summer here in Lawrence Fucking Kansas.
