On Friday night Mother Nature dumped a surprise snow storm on Lawrence, filling the air with a sort of magic and excitement for all the downtown revelers while heavy clumps of fluffy ice floated about their heads. Inside the Replay, another storm with its own excitement was brewing onstage.

Pale Hearts shows are one of the few times you’ll see healthy doses of dramatic sass and flair. Every single person in that band is flamboyant, spending a lot of their time thrusting their instruments into the air and jumping up and down. Everyone hopped about, and we’re pretty sure the drummer would have been jumping too if he didn’t have to sit down to play.

It didn’t take long for the crowd (admiring the new outside bar in the back) to get lured into the main area by those driving bass lines. The band’s chaotic ringleader, a snappy dresser fond of thrift-store suits, shimmied and shook his hips while the bassist (a lovely gal named Sweet Melinda who won our hearts over with her fast fingers) flung her hair every which way. “This song is called clock watchers!” the frontman yelled into the mic. “It’s about wieners!”

All jokes and Tom Foolery aside, the music was fairly electrifying (particularly the songs in the latter half of the set). Some tunes were even the sort of theme you’d hear leading up to a Tarantino film fight scene. The singer (who dubbed himself “Christian Mingle” but is more famously known as Rob Gillaspie) throws himself wholeheartedly into the act, pulling his hair, screaming, and scaling various pieces of equipment. But if the band were ever to tone down the theatrics, the danceable beats are just as thrilling.

Thanks for the writeup! I always worry that I’m not dancing enough until I see videos from the show. Obviously I need to dance HARDER and work off that gut, ha ha ha! Why didn’t anyone tell me?
