It’s time to get out of your winter funk and let The Kinetiks whip you into shape.

On Saturday they’re throwing a party at the Jackpot for their latest EP release. Their last two albums had school-oriented titles (Science is Magic and Music History), so it only makes sense that they settled on “Physical Education Extended Play” as the title of their next EP. “We’re continuing our theme,” says bassist Phil Gratz. “Our songs are very oriented to the physical this time.”

The band will indeed be in fine physical form on Saturday. In addition to hearing new music from The Kinetiks, fans will be treated to a light show and a little costumed fun. “We’ll be in full sports gear,” says Gratz. Guitarist and lead singer Spencer Goertz-Giffin says their costumes will be a little over the top. “Every CD release show we try to come up with some kind of costume or uniform and try to make it a little more special,” says Goertz-Giffin. “We would invite people to wear their P.E. outfits as well.”

If you don’t feel like playing dress up, then there’s something else you might want to bring along. The band will have physical copies of their EP available, but they’ll also be offering the EP digitally for anyone who shows up with a thumb drive. “We’re going to have it at the show on a laptop for people to bring flash drives if they want,” says Gratz. “We’re trying to roll with the times.”

The new EP should not be ignored. The band is maturing, switching it up with more members pitching in their vocal talents. “Physical Education Extended Play” was recorded at Mike Nolte’s (of Ghosty fame) studio, where the last ACBs album was put together, and the band says that’s what sold them on the recording experience.

There’s no doubt we’ll hear that same new-wave spunk that made the Kinetiks famous on the new EP. “I’ve been told that we have a certain combination of fun and aggression,” says Gratz. “It’s always been intense, but in the end it’s a really fun and rewarding project; to bash out new songs, strip away all the ideas we don’t like from each other, and see what’s left.”

You can see exactly what’s left this Saturday at the Jackpot. They’ll be joined by a mighty display of musical talent from Sona and The ACBs (no word on whether they’ll also be donning running shorts and sweatbands, but we won’t protest if they do).
